First, we discuss violence and compare perpetrator tactics in the Deaf community with observed tactics within the general hearing public. The training focuses on the actual task of mindful, trauma-informed interpreting in a variety of settings (e.g., women's shelter intake, rape kit emergency procedure, counseling sessions where violence is disclosed). This workshop discusses a variety of topics, such as language use, vicarious trauma, boundary setting, self care, safety considerations, use of a CDI, etc.

We will apply the Demand-Control Schema and analyze our choices and possible decision paths.

  • Recognize the dynamics of power and control and avoid colluding with those dynamics as an interpreter

  • Describe unique barriers of Deaf survivors

  • Identify tactics abusers use against Deaf survivors

  • Define and describe key aspects of SV

Identify the complexities of coercion and
    consent in a SV context

Describe the unique dynamics of sexual assault
    against Deaf survivors

Understand how trauma may impact interpretation
and then be able to navigate that impact

Develop vocabulary specific to Deaf survivors

Apply specific ethical behavior tools tointerpreting
    scenarios for Deaf survivors

Develop key resources and support systems
    for Deaf survivors

Analyze vicarious trauma, and develop practical
    self-care techniques
